Smash Up Your Television, Grow Your Home Based Internet Business!

television That’s right!
Turn it off, throw it out your window, smash it with a hammer, set it on fire, just get rid of it!

Your television may be one of the biggest time wasters in your life, and your life is far too valuable to waste watching silly, inane programs that bring little or no value into your life and keep you from getting work done, or playing with your kids, or getting exercise, or doing other productive things.

While there are some very worthwhile programs that are presented on TV such as award winning educational shows, shows about history and science and even some programs that are light-hearted and entertaining enough to leave us feeling uplifted, there are many, many shows that are just a waste of time. That’s time that you could spend working on building your home based Internet business, or doing other things that are fulfilling and important.

I want you to really think about the amount of time you spend each day and each week watching TV. Usually when someone watches television, they aren’t doing much else. It’s too distracting to work on business.

TV also does not count as quality time with family and friends. Sitting in front of the TV, eyes fixed on the screen, energy focused on the show that you’re watching doesn’t allow for anything that could rightly be described as quality time. Instead, you could be outside playing a game with your children, or learning a new hobby with a friend, or going for a jog together (spending time together and getting in shape!).

Did you know that TV takes some vital things away from you besides time for working on your home business and spending quality time with family and friends?

It takes away time that you could be spending on healthy things like going to the gym or going for a bike ride (fresh air and sunshine!). Some people find that sitting in front of the television contributes to weight gain (less exercise and more temptation to snack while watching). Talk about wallowing in a life void of success!

Did you know?

Television watching has been found to affect your brain. Studies have shown that TV watching leads your higher brain centers to shut down. These are the areas that involve critical thinking. Other studies have shown that reading and listening to music stimulates your brain because doing these things actually forces your brain to use it’s creativity to visualize what’s going on, so they are better activities.

Here are some hints that can help you watch less TV, leaving you more time (and brain power) for other interests and for your business:

  • See if you can go without television for a whole week. This will help you reframe your thinking about the importance of TV watching.
  • Make a list of the shows that are important to you and that you especially like. List them in order of priority.
  • Create a TV watching schedule that allows you to watch TV for a maximum of one hour per day.
  • Find other things to do – start an exercise program, play games with your kids, start a new hobby, go on a date, work on your MLM marketing plan, write articles, work on your MLM social networking – you get the idea.

You really don’t have to get rid of your TV. But do put it in it’s place. Part of being successful in MLM and life is getting your priorities straight.

TV isn’t a priority.

  • Hey Tommy

    I could not agree more.

I rarely turn the TV on just to flip through channels. Since I have satellite with a box that records, I record my favourite shows to watch later.

So when it is time to relax and unwind I will watch.

I think the danger is when people have the tv on just to have it on, then it becomes a real time waster.

I started taking my business seriously, I really made a ton

    when I have time.

I hear ya, I will watch them when it is time to relax and

  • Hey Tommy, this is excellent. I love it when people call it like it is.

My wife and I haven’t had TV for almost 3 years now and it is great. There is one show we can pick up on the local stations that we enjoy, and other than that the only time we use the sill thing is to what our Redbox or Netflix movies maybe once a week.

It has freed up SOOOO much time not having that silly thing.

Be careful though, just because you get rid of that doesn’t mean you can’t waste time. You might just fill it with Facebook or Twitter. When we first got rid of the TV, that’s exactly what happened.

So get rid of the TV and find something productive to do with your time.

    Michael,

I wasted plenty of time up until very recently when I revamped
my whole schedule. I decide to make LESS time for my business,
this way there is NO TIME to waste. So far, so good!

I think that my DVR and Netflix has helped me save so much time. I
have to have a TV, my two kids enjoy it but we limit their use.

My wind down time at night is used to watch our shows and without
the commercials. I also take a night off during the week to hang with
my wife and watch some TV.

As long as you are using your time wisely.

  • Tommy, you are right on. I get really tired of people saying that they can’t find the time to start their own busines, because they work a full-time job, yet they can give you every stat on every TV character that is on for that week.

As an entrepreneur you have to decide which one is more important… what’s on Dancing with the Stars or the chance to make your dreams come true. You can’t have both. There are only so many hours in a day.

Plus I get some great content ideas from some of these shows.

  • Hi Tommy,

Spot on post, thanks for sharing :)

I got rid of TV 5 years ago. I do have a television but no antennae or cable connection, just a handful of DVDs which I watch every few weeks. When at a friend’s house I may catch a show. On average I watch 1-2 hours of TV per week.

In its place I meditate, write articles and blog posts, shoot videos and spend my time on fine blogs like yours, networking with successful bloggers.

TV is generally a mental wasteland. It’s geared toward escapism, which is why reality TV is so popular. Cut the mental junkfood out and see how much better you feel.

  • Hi Tommy,

Really agree with your article. I’ve cut down on my tv viewing dramatically over the last few months. I’ve realised what a time waster it is.

It has freed up so much time that could be spent with my child, working or simply getting the house chores done at the end of each evening.

We have a Sky Plus box which does help, there are several programs that I might watch on a Friday night but that’s about it.

I rarely have my tv on during the day too, I’ve seen how my baby becomes a zombie staring at the screen :(

    Keep the good posts coming!

  • Tommy I agree 100% I hardly ever watch tv.

Don’t get me wrong I do sit down occasionally and watch a program or even rent a movie.

But this is very rare since I could be doing some money making or memory making activity elsewhere.

I really hope people are picking up on what your saying about reading.

The most successful people are always readers there is a lot of power in the written word to many to elaborate on at this time.

But the points you made are probably the most important.

  • Hi Tommy,

    This is a great topic!

The only thing on our TV is DVD’s we pop in from time to time. I haven’t had it hooked up to any channels in over 9 years. (Except a few years ago when it was less expensive to have internet & phone service if we included cable, that lasted about a year.)

I don’t remember it taking long to get used to… it was more of a relief than anything else.

Thanks for all the stats! Great stuff.

We all seem to be in agreement. I haven’t watched TV at all for about a year now, and for a couple before that hardly at all.

I think most of what’s on is a bunch of crap,is making people lazier, and is a major contributor to the “dumbing down of America”(or anywhere else).

Ryan put it perfectly a mental wasteland.

  • Hi Tommy,

awesome post. TV sucks, that’s right. And it’s a waste of time. What you’re writing, reminds of one of Rober Kiyosaki’s wisdoms: You don’t get rich in your work time. You get rich – or stay poor – in your spare time. Waste your spare time through watching TV and stay poor or invest your spare time in building a businesses or shopping for real estate, for example – and get rich.

  • Hey Tommy,

I’m an advocate of this! As a matter of fact I can go a month without TV. When you do that, you feel more productive because you’re doing other things to keep you busy.

I usually listening to music, play music, salsa dancing, reading a book, going for a walk, writing a blog, reading blogs, cooking (especially something new), cleaning, just something to keep my brain going.

If I do watch TV, it’s usually about an hour or hour and half watching the history channel or some funny cartoon lol….Anyways, Great Post!!

I couldn’t agree more with you. It is just amazing how much time we spend sitting or laying around watching TV, where this time could be used to do something far more productive.

I believe that giving up such luxuries and leisures is the hardest barrier home based businesses struggle to overcome in their early stages.

You need to be disciplined and set a certain amount of time aside for the TV so you can actually get your home business off the ground.
